Adjustment of exposure would help, but unfortunately it is only available in programs like Adobe photoshop. You're doing fine though, and I can see that you got the hang of it by the time you posted your second picture here.
If you feel like it, you could also say "hi" in the "Introduce yourself" forum - would give us all a chance to say hi.
