Wow! I downloaded your pic and magnified the area marked and there's quite a bit going on in that little square. I noted several faces including a couple of nice ones in profile facing to the right.
I think you're spot on with your theory, I feel our friends have been wanting to communicate with us for while, but had to wait for our technology to improve to a point where they would have a better chance of doing so.
You've got me wanting to go back through all my old vacation photo's now.
