It sounds like you have your software setup right. As far as putting the mic near a sound source - spirit can use any sound, so the source is yours for the choosing.
I have never used presets for DCSix, but I like to use the continuous noise filter on auto spectrum and also on normal cnf - with the adjustment of the frequency spectrum done by ear.
