Jan, unfortunately there is no way to rule out pareidolia from any ITC endeavor, both audible and visual. The best we have to go on is the quality of the image vs. the raw material used to create that image, or sound. Depending on the method being used. I don't find this method of being any less credible than water ITC, video feedback loops, ITC scope, or any other method.
I suppose the only way to rule it out somewhat, would be to try and contact a specific entity, and capture any likenesses of said entity, and compare it to known photographs or sound recordings of the person who you are attempting to contact.
