 I gave up on the dollar store radios, almost too cheap and brittle to work with anyways and the sweep is all wrong after modification.
So now I just ordered a cheap FM radio kit that has a varactor diode that I will try controlling with a 555 timer chip using sawtooth or waveform oscillations.

Yeah...that's it!
