Ash,

Here is a site that has examples of all the variations on the Frank Sumption spirit radio:

The minibox in all iterations is a very fine piece of equipment. I have a minibox classic and love it. I am currently working on building a linear voltage tuner board that will emulate the "triangle" linear sweep of the original minibox so I plan on experimenting with that as applied to different voltage tuned radios.

thanks
Andy

Yes, but times have made people nervous about spending $200 on a spirit box.

Ash,

Sounds like a lemon if the shack hack works in the same reception area. My experience with "refurbs" has been lemons that  don't show when factory inspects them.

I think the mini has a sensitivity control that might be turned up and the antenna might need a long wire or proximity to a window to pick up signal

Ron Rickett's is really good at standing behind his products. Dunno what the problem may be, but if you have reception on your other radios, you should have an equal amount on your mbox. Not sure when you tried it, but nighttime has better am signal propagation, so it might be more successful. At any rate, I am sure that they will make it right, they were quick to fix a problem I had with a box. Best of luck

if the minibox doesn't have enough selectivity the strong station will override the weaker stations. Reducing gain will just cause the weak stations to be hard to hear.

If you have enough signal for a radio shack pocket radio the loop antenna will only make the existing signals stronger...including the spanish station......

A preselector antenna that tunes each station could increase selectivity but I'm afraid you have a bad mini

fraid so

Here is a radio that is a chinese copy of an older design from RCA/GE that uses voltage tuned preselector and if circuitry that can be sweep tuned with an external ramp voltage like the Frank's Box but has good selectivity. It has a big speaker with good tone.

It is out of production but some are left for cheap.

Ash,

I need half ($99) up front to buy parts and assemble it for you. It's hand wired and I don't have a stack of boards already assembled so it may take a week or so. When it's done you can send the second payment of $100 and I will ship priority mail no charge.

my email is:  [email protected]
Skype name is: joecioppi

email me and I'll send you my snail mail address to sent your check since I don't use paypal
