Cheap no name TV was basically brand new in its box at a local thrift store. TVs were 50% off that day. I paid $2.50 for this thing.....figured I would eventually do something with it....has a big tuning dial on the side...so i figured it was air cap tuned.......It has been in my car trunk for six months....brought it in......cracked it open......first thing i saw was an air cap tuner.....bout put the thing back together because I've never swapped the air tuner for varactors before...to much to get into on a Saturday.

I decided to look around in there anyways.....I noticed the air cap was for the built in AM/FM tuner.....if that was the case....wheres the dude for the TV tuner circuit.....The gear assembly went down a few gears and on the bottom one, it was a potentiometer....followed the trace to an RF shielded box.

Frank was right.  Alot of these puppies are VT, at least this one was.  As for the 30V sweep.....nope.....I used my standard textbook dual opamp triangle wave circuit modified for 9v single supply, and sub 1Hz output....not exactly sure how slow....1Mpot/100uf slow..... slow enough I can catch the Weather emergency boadcast on the UHF....Which seems to be about middle of the sweep....last time i fooled with a radio that could tune those freqs in, it seemed to be in the middle of the band somewhere......so... close enough. Im thinking of putting the Brightness Contrast and V-hold controls on strobes via separate oscillators driving LEDs/LRDs to complete the circuit .......

Here is some audio of a short video I made, the video was 80mb... VHF, so no emergency broadcast system false positives.....
Basically starting out with a VERY VERY SLOW sweep....you hear me turn the phone towards my scope....then back towards the TV, i start speeding up the sweep.....fast/slow/fast back and forth....you know..playing with it..just got the thing rockin...still on the bread board.....

Nice clip.

If you can do live audio filtering you might come up with something like this:

I use DC8 by diamond cut audio.  They have a multi-filter function that allows for real-time filtering.

You can download a full featured 15 day trial and or purchase the program at a special holiday rate.

IMO DC8 kicks all other software to the curb   including Adobe Audition for EVP filtering.

Here's the link:

http://www.diamondcut.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=31&zenid=e83aee23f39643c072ce89d01d162bad

Hope this helps,
Ron

That does look pretty tough. yeah ive never experimented with live noise filtering....Ive done RTA room prints, for auto EQ-ing rooms and such..... The DC8 takes it to a new level.

Project update.
The circuit board is wired. The VT sweep and LDR/LED strobe outputs are wired to terminal blocks. There is still work needing to done with some switching. Three way toggles will be used to switch from strobe on/off- default potentiometer control/on- with a combination off timing of the default potentiometer control. The controls being strobed are, brightness, contrast, and V-hold.

During The testing for the strobe controls, I took about 1200 photos. Unfortunately the images captured, appeared to be a lot sharper and defined, on the tiny display of the camera.

The images lacked optimal contrast and focus. In real time, the screen appeared to be mostly solid snow. Quick snaps on the camera show a different picture.

While the test was being performed. I was getting strange sounds, tonal resonance of sorts. There were a few voices captured. The old TV bands are not completely abandoned. There is still a chance of a random amateur radio user, CB, wireless phone, or baby monitor.  At certain higher sweep speeds, I would assume it wouldn't matter all that much, regarding multiple syllable single voice responses.

While the unit is not assembled, I think it would be prudent to incorporate a VT and scope tap, so that the band could be manually tuned, while observing the scope, to determine any occupied frequencies, and documented. Optimally the experiments should be videoed, while incorporating the screen and scope in the same frame. Coupled with the audio track on the recording, constant false positives can be ruled out. Intermittent transmission however can not.

Here are a few screen shots to demonstrate, the effects of strobing the contrast, brightness, and V-hold, while sweeping the band.

I will upload the audio snippets at a later point.

Hey Doc....

What do you think about using an old Wobbulator in a video feedback loop?

Ron, my answer is yes. Do you have one?

Also, I've wondered from time to time, what would happen if the video RCA outs, were adapted to 1/4" mono, into a guitar digital delay box, and back to RCA again to your input.

Never tried it. Probably wouldn't work, but that idea in general.

I was not intending on recording audio.
I was hearing bizzare sounds. Types of sounds I was not getting, working in the garage. As an experimental audio enthusiast I had to go grab the recorder.

Basically, if I started hearing weirdness, I would hit the record button for a minute or two. I ended up with 10 full tracks, about 8meg. If any body wants to hear the full context, I will gladly send you the MP3 files.

Some of the more formed ambient tones I was hearing, had managed to be captured. I did receive alot of voice sounding fragments.

This was not a question response session, everything captured was in a non contextual environment.  Just observing the device.

Although.

*Just to point out, you will hear the beeping of the camera.*

At the very beginning of my session I said one thing.  "we're listening...........and watching"  I was by myself, I don't know why I said "we".

At about  6s & again at 8.5s, there is a faint "train" horn. This was typical of what I was hearing in the noise. These two particular seemed to be more defined, in attack and release, synthesizer terms if you will.

The full recordings are chalked full of sounds like this.
Perhaps at some point I will try to run noise prints.

These  vocal tones may not necessarily be a product of spirit manifestation, but a representation of the varieties of types of vocal tones the device produces.

This one is not so clear as to speech, but it is a significantly louder. Causing me to question, false positives. It sounds like a sweeper box on AM broadcast.

There was a point in time that seemed like the camera was affecting the TV. It was weird, can't explain, caught some of it in the audio.

Before you hear the beep of the camera, there seems to be an odd digital sounding sweep building up to the actual beep sound. Two times I caught this, out of about 1200 shots. My only explanation of this is, possibly.....with no program signal coming in, the detector becomes very sensitive to the antenna, and what you are possibly hearing are the crystal oscillators from the camera generating RF.  BUT again, this was only a couple of times out of 1200 shots.

The voices were progressively getting more solid over time. This was the last one I captured.

Again I cannot rule out intermittent transmissions.  The sounds were increasingly, like capturing raw audio on the AM sweeper, stuttering like it was hitting multiple stations.

Sorry Doc.  I just have a wob vst plug-in.

Maybe the word Wobbulator is a bit of a misnomer.  These guys call it as such but it is a Raster Manipulation Unit.

Here's a link to a youtube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijAaLxiYiWM

At the 2 minute mark they do a video feedback that kinda looks like Klaus Schreiber on steroids.

Ron, I've seen this video before. It's quite awesome.  I believe the original unit used six oscillators?

I would definitely like to know more specifics to the design.  The extra yoke coils, type of waveform, and amplitude etc..

I think such physical hardware manipulation, especially when producing fractals coupled with feedback, there is a good chance of something awesome happening.

I wonder, if spinning magnets at different speeds, around the yoke coils could cause a similar, but less intense effect.

We all remember what happens to CRTs when we place magnets around them.

I like VST plugs, what is yours called?
