For several years I have been working with different types of vibrationally produced sound. The example I am posting was created using a two sided sponge and a large smooth glass tray from an old microwave oven. The sponge is lightly misted with a glass cleaner and lightly rubbed across the smooth glass surface. The recorder is laying flat on the glass tray as well, in order to pick up more of the vibrational energy. This example was from the 'scotch brite' side of the sponge, which produces a lower tone of voices. "My question for a boy, is this real?" Please let me know if you can hear any of this, Thanks, Dave Attachment: 082809myquestionforaboyisthisreal (3).mp3 (Downloaded 985 times) |

Hi David, Very interesting audio indeed. I wonder if some day you will produce a controlled (requiring no physical action on your part) source that they will easily and continuously speak over. Surely, this is highly likely and somethign you have pondered for years... I hear the second one a little different, I hear it as: "I hear people, I hear David, *unknown*) Keith |

Vicki Talbott wrote: I love your experiments Dave and I can hear this clearly! Vicki Thanks Keith & Vicki. I am aso getting strange whisper type voices with this method. This example has a robotic electronic sound to it. "Getting you from London" I had asked for assistance from "loud talkers" in London. They will typically come through on request and usually have an accent. This time I did not detect an accent. Thanks again, Dave Attachment: 090609gettingyoufromlondon.mp3 (Downloaded 1214 times) |

I tried this technique again last night. There was mention of Indiana and the word earthquake. Also, this curious chatter about a furnace. I have heard this type of chatter before, I record in the basement. "We have problem setting our furnace" Attachment: 092309wehaveproblemssettingourfurnace.mp3 (Downloaded 943 times) |

Attached is the photo of the whole set-up. I have added the soft drink can as a size reference. The recorder is a Voice 2000 model DA-200. The sponge is nothing special, I see these in just about every store around here. The green side is a scrubbing pad. The glass tray is setting on two plastic spools. The glass needs to vibrate, so it should not be totally on a solid surface that would absorb the vibrations. Dave Attached Image (viewed 651 times): |

- i wonder what would happen if you could have a rotating cylinder of glass and a fixed sponge contact , with some sort of ( er ) pickup arm connected to the outer casing of the recorder ?? just a thought - thanks for the photo BTW i must try this |

I tried the same set up with the glass tray again. This time I used a piece of thin wall plastic tubing (shrink tubing) instead of the sponge. It took awhile to get the hang of it. The best results were at the start of the session. Voice: "Alvin" Dave: "What is your name please?" Response: "First name? Alvine" Attachment: 092509firstnamealvine.mp3 (Downloaded 930 times) |

Vicki Talbott wrote: That's cool, Dave! What is shrink tubing? Vicki I attached a photo from the net. The tubing is a heat shrink tubing. Typically used over an electrical connection and then heated so it shrinks in place instead wraping with an electrical tape. It is very thin and vibrates well against the glass. I'm sure many other materials would work as well or better. Dave Attached Image (viewed 592 times): Last edited on Sep 25th, 2009 10:21 AM by EVPDave |

Thanks so much Dave! By the way, my dog Kobi (almost 13) in this picture died last night in her sleep. Can you all think good thoughts for her safe passage to Braden, who chose her at the pound when she was a pup? Thanks so much. Of course, I am a wreck. question :i think you said you got the glass tray from a micro wave oven - wonder if the exposure to the microwaves has given the glass any "properties" ?? and would ordinary plate glass work ?? just another thought |

Using the very same glass tray and recorder I modified this experiment. One of the spools under the glass tray is wired to what is called a "Bedini" circuit. When the circuit is energized a magnet can be spun at a good rate of speed. This spinning magnet has a strong field for a couple of feet. I placed a button type Neo magnet on the recorder and recorded this vibration. The playback required filtering in Clear Voice to be understood, the 'power hum reduction' setting must be used. In this clip I am called by name. "Help me David, communication is often reverse" Attachment: 092809helpmedavidcommunicationisoftenreverse3.mp3 (Downloaded 1663 times) |

Another session using the spinning magnet alone. This was at the very end of the session. I often get messages about a 'network'. In this clip they mention closing the network at the end of this session. Dave: "Good-bye" Response: "Closing network" Attachment: 092709closingnetwork2.mp3 (Downloaded 962 times) |

yeah, pretty neat. makes you think someday someone is going to pull out some type of random noise generator that is going to produce the right combination - perhaps mixed with the intentions of a group of people - to output a really nice, understandable voice. I think it is possible. Keith |

Friends, This effect reminds me of Ben Franklin's glass harmonica or whatever he called it. It was based on rubbing tuned glass disks with his fingertips to play tunes. I wonder if a series of vocal tones from rotating glass plates would contain spirit voices too. One plate could be turned by a record player turntable while the sponge is held against it. Maybe a few layers of wool could support the plate without dampening the vibs. Joe |

joecioppi wrote: Friends, Thanks everyone for the feedback on these experiments. Oddly enough Joe I have been thinking along the same lines. Today I was at the local Science Surplus store and they had stacks of glass cut into circular plates. The smallest size was 15 inches across. I have to make some measurements but I think it may be too large for my turntable. In previous experiments I used a wide Velcro strip on an old phonograph record. I got some good results with that method. Thanks, Dave |

I was thinking about Joe's comment about Franklin's Glass Armonica. I have a rather large Waterford crystal bowl that was given to me this year as a service award. I placed the recorder in the bottom center of the bowl. I moistened my trusty sponge and gave it a workout on the rim of the bowl. I had announced what I was doing at the start and I believe I hear some voices testing. I hear a high pitched voice that blends in well with the resonant frequency of the bowl. This bowl will resonate very loudly, it's scary . See if you can follow along with the high pitched voice that is the loudest. There are other voices talking but this one is by far the loudest. Tonight I tried an experiment placing my optical (flame) microphone in the center of the crystal bowl. Last night in a session I got a name "Ralph Kunzelman". So I called out for a message from Ralph. The response is somewhat melodic and almost clearer then my own voice. The resonance of the bowl seems to act as a good carrier for the voices. Listen at a low volume level at first, this seems to help with clarity. Dave: "Ralph Kunzelman, do you have a message for us?" Response: "I just sent ya perfume" Attachment: 100809ijustsentyaperfume.mp3 (Downloaded 767 times) |

Well, remember the glass harmonica/armonica was rumored to drive its players crazy. Maybe it was the voices... So on that note, maybe we should check this out... I've been interested anyway from a purely sonic perspective. I don't have the liquidity to buy it any time soon, but maybe one of you well-heeled ITC researchers can forego building a second frickin' laser beam and check it out as a new avenue in ITC: http://www.soniccouture.com/en/products/p53-glass-works/ Note also that it samples the Cloud Chamber Bowls which were created by Harry Partch, who was MORE than rumored to be batshit crazy. |

I simplified this method a bit. It works fine using a plastic funnel with cling wrap plastic stretched across the funnel. A moist sponge is used against the surface of the plastic cling film to create the vibration. The funnel is placed on a section of plastic sump pump type hose. The recorder can be fitted at the end of the hose. The reflected sound and vibration seem to work well together. I will post a few examples. I went back to this simple method last night. I used a small piece of Styrofoam type packing sheet (like paper) . I rubbed this on the surface of my washer. The best results were obtained rubbing the oval emblem on the washer door. The recorder was isolated from the surface by using a thick soft sponge. The recorder was a DA 200. No radio or background noise was used. This was from the end of the session. "Will gather at the antenna" There is a 20 foot tall aluminum antenna outside on the opposite end of the house.
