I'm wondering if those tones were in a frequency range that a spirit could use for their "voice".  Like the tones used with the spiricom?

maybe do some sort of side-by-side comparison of the normal dial up tones and see if the one on your tape differs on the spectograph.  As for myself - no personal experience with that - but maybe someone can chime in with the logic of that thought or the lack of.
