Keith and guys, Something you could easily do to decrease the ac interference in your recording equipment is to power it up using a regenerator like PS Audio Powerplant http://www.psaudio.com/ps/products/list/power It recreates a clean ac from an internal bank of dc batteries. It will decrease noticeably the noise floor. You may also find some at ebay or audiogon. For low consumption gear even the powerplant 300 would do the trick.
