 I agree with you, but I've always hated noise reduction, and would never use it. What I used here was noise removal, it's available on the unstable version of Audacity. You should try it, if you've used Audacity before. It doesn't produce the sound artifacts of noise reduction. Of course anything can be overdone, and I always keep that in mind. If I use a lot of anything, it's for my ears only, and would never be used as evidence.
