There are most likely several reasons:
If I saw a leg, would I know it was a leg? Probably not, especially if out of context, as in a leg without a body.
If you were in spirit, and wanted to let me know that you were trying to communicate, what would I most likely recognize, or possibly have some famialirity with?
With the exclusion of these two ideas, I really don't know.
