 I'm thinking he sold you a defective DR60 (audio out) - because I've used plenty of the adapters from radio shack that fit...and all have worked. I prefer the all metal ones when I can get them - only because they are more solid.

*If it's not been long ago from Ebay purchase (I think is around 45 days now) you can put in a DISPUTE and get your money back. I'm sure you paid well for it - I have in the past. Your messaging to the seller (if through eBay) has been recorded so you have proof that it was right after the sale that you noticed a problem. Good luck.
