 The argument is not that the germanium diode is in anyway inferior, quite the opposite, especially for radio wave detection.

That being said.... The idea is to be able to modulate the voltage drop characteristics of the detector itself.

I assume you are moving a wiper across the tuning coil, when you say "in a similar way as the planchette"?
