I'm convinced of their existence too but firmly believe that they can do very little to effect you unless you let them.
Both my recordings and others whom I trust, would suggest that there is around us all the time, an intelligence of some kind that is able to communicate with us. Bricks and mortar aren't going to make a blind bit of difference to a poltergeist or spirit, wherever it is, our physics don't apply.
Every experimenter and researcher I know has the odd thing happen that would suggest activity at home. There's nothing to fear except fear. I sleep next to my seance room that's been used for regular sittings for many years, sure I have some odd things happen and the electrics have a life of their own but it goes with the job. Don't be hesitant, be knowledgeable and read up on your subject before something you don't expect happens.
If you are nervous before you begin then you're not in the right place. Take it seriously and you'll be fine.
