Alternatively you could build a crystal type at first, at least to explore various aerials, reception strengths of your local stations etc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skKmwT0EccE
Once that works well, then you'd know the AM side of any future project would have a better chance of running as you wish.
And onward could be experiments with changing coil lengths, tuning to unused areas of the dial or building to actually avoid radio reception, for EVP or other experiments.
