I have found something cool, a free program for private use called Yenka, it allows you to frig around with circuits, it differs in my Linux programs in that it has pictorial representations if you wish.
It even has the 555 chip in the menu.

Now, a question.
My thoughts are to control the scan with the 555 chip adjustable by a pot.
Would I use a transistor as the switch (wired into the scan button)?
Or a relay of some sort (too mechanical, or is there a such thing as solid state relays?)

I will have to find out about freecycle.
Went to 'the source' (formerly radio shack), had no pots, that ain't no source at all!
I will get one, weather off a piece of junk or another parts store. I probably have pots, at my Dad's, in storage.
My unit will be battery powered, thanks for the diode tip though.
