I haven't been around here as much as have wished to, am glad I remembered my password !

If I remember correctly -
Cut the trace to Pin 1, then connect a 1K pot between Pin 1 and the Positive of the power supply. It allows more or less audio through as the chip sweeps.
Best thing, is to connect small flying leads to the Positive and Pin 1, rather than try to solder the leg of a pot anywhere.
