What do you recommend in the way of equipment? And what are good retailers for it?

I'm reading Anabela's "Electronic Voices" book, and it seems that the best way to get started is with a shortwave radio: a digital recorder: and headphones. What do you recommend in the way of equipment? And what are good retailers for it? Jim
