EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon. What is it? According to AAEVP.com: "the term traditionally used to describe unexpected sounds or voices sometimes found on recording media." Basically, let's say that you have some type of audio recording device. You're alone. You push "record", and ask a question. Upon playback you hear a reply, the sound of an unknown voice, which was inaudible to your ears while recording. The voice you recorded is referred to as "evp." By it's nature, evp can often be hard to hear and/or understand. As you browse the web and listen to samples of evp, remember that everyone records and interprets evp in different ways. Though I have recorded about 1,000 hours of evp sessions, good clips of evp have been hard for me to come by. This is the reason why there are few clips on this website. It is not necessary to be at a haunted location or graveyard in order to record evp. Though the energy of these locations and the entities present may have a direct influence on the quality and quantity of evp recorded, it is not a prerequisite for recording evp. My best evp recording occured on Christmas day, while sitting on my couch in the living room, only myself and girlfriend present. The American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena should be one of the first websites you visit for more information about this topic. They have also provided a faq section which may answer most of your questions, which covers everything from questions about the nature of evp to methods of recording. Links are provided on the about page, which can give you more information about the history of evp. Sarah Estep, the founder of the AAEVP , has developed a system for grading the hearability and understandability of evp recordings. They are referred to as Class A, Class B, and Class C. Click here to go to the page on the AAEVP website which describes these classifications. Click here to go to a page on the www.worlditc.org website entitled "Getting Started in Spirit Communication through Technology" by Mark Macy. Go to the files section to hear samples of my evp recordings. Go to the guest or the forum section to view samples from guests who have contributed them to this website. For those of you who plan to experiment with evp, I offer a few simple guidelines. DO have a positive attitude. It is well-known and documented that the attitude of the experimenter is extremely important to the process. DO attempt to set a consistent schedule when recording. DO be an experimenter, always willing to try something new. Every person's contacts are different, and depend on many different variables. It's great to start by using the methods given to us by previous researchers and pioneers in this field. After initial contact has been established, follow your feelings and try new things. DON'T give up. Konstantin Raudive recorded for 3 months until he recorded his first voice. He later went on to record, analyze, and collect more than 70,000 voices. There will be many times when it will be difficult to hear or collect evp. This is normal. Try not to become frustrated. How do I record evp? Let's start with the basics. In order to record evp, all you need is some type of audio recording device and the desire to communicate. A computer and software will also prove to be very useful in removing excess noise, but it's not a requirement. "Audio recording device" can mean: reel to reel tape recorders, cassette recorders, IC (integrated circuit) handheld digital recorders, microphone into computer sound card, ultrasonic recorders, etc. The list goes on and on. If it can record sound, it can record evp. For a beginner, a handheld digital recorder with the ability to upload to a computer is recommended. When communicating with the afterlife, you talk to them just as you would talk to anyone else. While asking questions, give appropriate time for them to reply. 20 seconds is given as a standard wait time between questions. By it's nature, evp is not usually heard until playback of the recording. It's easy to become confused and scared when you first begin recording evp, but there's no reason to be. Typically, your head will be full of questions like: "Who is talking to me?" "What are they saying?" "Can they see me?" "Are they always there?" "How can I hear them better?" "Why can't I hear anything at all?" Do your research first, and then most of your questions will be answered. The links on this website will tell you all that you need to know. It's perfectly natural to have inclinations towards doubt, frustration, and confusion in the beginning. Overcome them. People in spirit have a higher vibration than we do. They still retain their personalities and interests. They have no boundaries of time and space. Be aware that there is always someone around you. People that are attuned to higher vibrations are usually referred to as psychics, mediums, and clairvoyants. Comparisons Analog vs. Digital: Which is better? It all comes down to personal preference and experience. There are some researchers who feel that analog (tape) yields better results than digital. In general, recorders that use tapes are analog. Handheld recorders and computer sound cards are digital. I don't have an opinion on the matter because I have only experimented with digital; However, it may cost more for a microphone and tape recorder that rival the sound quality of a decent handheld recorder. Background sounds: Most evp researchers use some type of background sound while recording for evp. Environmental conditions are usually directly related to the sound and tonal quality of evp formation. It stands to reason that if you record evp while an airplane is flying overhead, the sound of the evp you record will most likely have the characteristics of the sound of an airplane. There are no rules when choosing a background sound, but the most popular choices seem to be: a radio tuned off-station to the sound of white noise, running water, or some type of foreign language recording or broadcast.
